Dress Design Contest
We began our celebration with a contest to design a new dress for Princess Odette. We received 140 designs from talented fans and we loved every single one!
Congratulations to Shayna Snyder who designed the winning dress!
The talented Swan Princess mascot @ellie_the_odette worked, with help from her team, to make the dress for the 30th Anniversary and National Princess Day.
Here is how this beautiful masterpiece came to life!
The raw materials were gathered: beautiful trims, sleek satin, cotton muslin, and enough thread to stretch to Chamberg and back! The pattern was drawn and each individual piece began to be sewn.
The large bow had to defy gravity and not be crushed in transport so it was made as a separate piece.
The boned corset was made of a white satin brocade that practically glowed!
The shawl collar was attached and the sleeves made in two parts so they could drape perfectly, even as the arms were moved around.
The structure underneath the dress was built with fluffy crinoline and traditional hoops so that the skirt floated away from the body, but still had the "swish" of movement from the design sketch.
The canine "assistants" tested it's comfort level and found the skirt 100% nap worthy!
Art cels from the original 1994 Swan Princess film were sourced for the medallions on the center of the skirt. They were compiled, simplified, and turned into a template so they could then be quilted.
By choosing to quilt the medallions instead of embroidering them we were able to create the raised and shadowed texture from the design sketch.
The satin skirt was built on a mannequin to accommodate its draped shape. It was hemmed and the pearl ruffle edging was sewn. Embellishments were added along with markers to show where the medallions would be attached. As a hidden "Easter egg" shapes were hidden in the swirling golden cords: a heart, a music note, a simple swan. What other designs can you find?
For the centerpiece of the look a hand-cut cabochon brooch was made just for this dress. The center stone is a sea-stone conglomerate with copper in the middle and turquoise edging surrounded by a brass casing adorned with AB crystals. The shine and sparkle of this piece is exquisite!
Finally all of the pieces came together for the celebration photos! Complementary accessories were worn- swan shaped shoes, a tiara, and Odette's classic gold heart locket.
We think the gown and the pictures turned out truly SWANderful! Which is your favorite? Keep an eye on our website and on our social media, @SwanPrincessOfficial, for more photos from this incredible shoot.
