SWANtastic Scenery

Who can forget Princess Odette transforming under the moonlight. This SWANderful craft captures the beauty of The Swan Princess movies and even includes some moonlit magic to bring your picture to life!

Why not add other characters to your painting too? Maybe JeanBob on a lily pad? Or Puffin flying across the night sky? You might even have Speed swimming across the water - if you can draw him before he quickly swims away that is!

You Will Need:

3 tbsp salt (plus more if you want your moon to be even whiter)

Pen/Pencil

Black paper

Paintbrush

Orange Paint

White Paint

Black paint

Blue Paint

Glue

Optional: Click here for a swan template if you don't want to draw one by hand.

Method:

1. First we need somewhere for the swan to sit so we will start with the lake. Paint the lower third of your black paper with blue paint. You can also add some small white lines after the paint has dried to make your water stand out even more.

2. When the paint has dried, combine 1/2 cup warm water with the salt and use your paint a circle with the salt water in one of the top corners of your page. Wait a few seconds and you will see that the paper turns white where you have added the salt water - this will be our moon!

3. Add some additional small dots or star shapes in the "sky" using the salt water if you would like to.

4. Draw your swan outline (either by hand or using the template - you can also glue the template onto the page) so that your graceful bird is sitting on the water.

5. If you have drawn your swan or used paper that is different to white for your stencil, use white paint (if needed) to color the body of the swan.

Terrific Toffee Apples

Derek and Odette can't resist a toffee apple when they see them being sold in the village! They love it even more when they can sit eating them with Alise and their friends watching fireworks light up the night sky across the Kingdom!

This delicious recipe will tell you how to make your very own toffee apples - be sure to ask a grown up for help as you need to be very careful when heating sugar!

When the apples have cooled, take a bite from your delicious treat and enjoy them with your favorite movie, watching fireworks or just for a tasty treat!

Ingredients:

• 8 Granny Smith apples

• 4 tbsp golden syrup

• 400g golden caster sugar

• 1 tsp vinegar

Special Equipment:

• Skewers (or Lolly/Popsicle Sticks)

• Sugar Thermometer (Optional)

Method:

1. Place your apples in a large bowl (you might need to do this several times if all of your apples don't fit in the bowl) and cover them with boiling water - this helps the caramel to stick later!

2. Dry the apples using kitchen roll.

3. Twist the stalks and pull them from the apples.

4. Take your first skewer and push it through the end of each apple (where you just removed the stalk from).

5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment and place it close to the stove top then stand the apples on the tray (you might need more than one tray)

6. Pour the sugar into a pan.

7. Add 0.5cups/100ml of water to the sugar and set over a medium heat.

8. Heat the sugar and water mix for 5 minutes until the sugar has dissolved.

9. Add the vinegar and syrup and stir the mixture.

10. Boil the sugar mix to 300F/150C. You can use a sugar thermometer for this. Alternatively, pour a little of the mixture into a bowl of cold water to test the temperature. If it goes hard immediately and then becomes easy to break when removed from the water, it's ready to go! If the sugar is still soft, continue to boil the mixture.

11. When the mixture is ready, dip one of the apples into the pan on an angle. Twist the apple quickly (but carefully) so that it is fully covered. Gently lift the apple out of the toffee and allow the excess to drip away before placing it back on the baking parchment to cool/harden.

12. Repeat the process with the remaining apples, pausing to allow the toffee to keep the correct temperature again if you need to.

It's November and that means it is the beautiful, kind, and graceful Princess Odette's birthday!

Her birthday is November 18 which makes her birthstone the yellow topaz and her zodiac sign Scorpio.

Scorpio's traditionally are resourceful, brave, and make very good friends. They cling to facts and truth. They strongly dislike superficiality.

Yellow topaz symbolizes love, affection, and joy. It is believed to give anyone who wears it increased intelligence and strength.

That sounds just like Princess Odette to us!

We also think it is a wonderful coincidence that the yellow stone is just like the yellow locket Odette wears in the movie!

Is your birthday in November or do you just love the color yellow?
